Decked away in Gate 2 of DIFC near the self-proclaimed art district of Dubai lies the great revival of the world’s oldest and finest fish eatery where traditionality lingers and simplicity oozes at Wheeler’s of St James Dubai by Marco Pierre White.
A chefs table experience for the night unfolded at Wheeler’s as Executive Chef Gavin Gleenson joined the table for a night of giggles, an insight to Wheeler’s, a peak into the behind the scene kitchen action as well as the importance of fresh ingredients and seafood. The unusual yet prominent discussion of the night included Batman as well, believe it or not.
A taste of a tuna carpaccio with a chilli and lime dressing adorned with unique compressed water melon slices was delicate and adored to the taste. The breaded pan-fried foie gras, with delicious brandied cherries was rich, buttery, and tantalizing. A pan seared scallops, with coconut and tomato compote was sizeable and lush to the taste.
I strayed from the occasional lust of an airy battered fish or a crumb crust and craved for the glistening glaze of a perfectly grilled lobster which was accompanied with robust lemon butter dressing. Be warned, as even the lobster isn’t spared from a decent helping of fries served with dips.
I reached heights of gluttony as the delicious sides of creamed and dauphinoise potatoes were ordered as sides resulting in glorified indulgence.
A merriment of a night ended with decadence from the taste of desserts which included a white chocolate and peanut cheesecake served with, you’d never guess but a peculiarly flavorsome popcorn ice cream! The chocolate fondant with its perfect gooey lush chocolaty center with each spoonful was truly savored with the dollop of vanilla ice cream. Cambridge burnt cream (crème brûlée) struck silence with each spoon crack that exposed the custard-y center laced with vanilla bean, delightful.
If you’re craving for an authentic yet simplistic seafood experience that’s British but catered to the cosmopolitan taste buds of UAE – Wheeler’s is your hook, line and sinker.
