The puff pastry adventure…

I cheated.

Now hold on, before you jump on the assumption bandwagon, I cheated on my love for baking by opting for the easier way out, as a sudden urge for a flaky puff pastry mixed with weekend laziness, my only option was to drive down to the nearest pastry store or to satisfying my cravings without having to leave the comfort of my home.

Recently, I purchased a packet of frozen puff pastry which I have never used prior, but curiosity took over, as the four to five brands on display in the frozen section at the supermarket next to an array of frozen pizzas caught my attention.

Opting for a brand, mainly due to the attractive packing, the adventure began as the instructions relayed were as simple as three steps:

1: Thaw,
2: Bake; and
3: Cool.

Pre-heating the gas oven, I simultaneously thawed the frozen pre-square
cuts of dough, placed on the tray and baked for nearly ten minutes, watching the individual cuts rise and graciously exposing the crumbling layers.

In all honesty, this was the most simplistic, satisfactory and fool proof baking I experienced in a while, as the pastry rose delicately and in perfect shape without me panicking and having to worry about crumbling puff pastry dough.

At last, craving sweet over savory and the availability of fresh cream, blueberries and strawberries resulted in a two, might I add, stunning pastries. #happyJ 🙂

  1. I think it’s nigh on impossible to make puff pastry in June temperatures in Dubai without a special fridge and intense a/c. Now all-butter puff pastry is available here bought frozen is a great option – and love what you did with it.
