It’s not often that one would venture into old Dubai but a strong craving and the need to cross a foodie experience within UAE from my ever-growing list led path to Shogun located in Al Ghurair Center.
Korean grub is widely available around Dubai as the ever booming cosmopolitan city is a gateway for a victuals experience and after a quick web search; Shogun appeared to be the appropriate choice for a first time indulgence of a Korean fare.
At first glance, Shogun resembled a scene from the Rush Hour movie installments of an underground eatery bursting with a mix of far eastern nationalities who seemingly knew the dishes without a glance at the menu as well as the lively chatter in the air and surprisingly at full capacity for a weekday.
A quick scan at the menu, I realized that I knew zilch about Korean cuisine but was adamant to discover the famous Korean BBQ. Luck struck as the gentle manager leaped forward and provided her expert suggestions which included crowd favorites off the menu as well as a taste of traditional items for the taste buds to savor.
The Galbi Jeongsik, a traditional Korean Beef Short Ribs BBQ was well marinated along with the Bulgogi Jeongsik; a Korean Beef Sirloin BBQ. The succulence of the short ribs and sirloin was beyond what one expected as the lush marinade oozed into the meat, glistening away slowly and caramelizing on the BBQ situated in center of the table seated. The joy of cooking your own meat according to one’s preference is truly worth experiencing, fuss free. The meat was paired with various accompanying sauces from a sesame oil mix, to a chill flaked spice sauce to a gingery based mixture, kimchi and more.
A night of new experience, one dared to try the Useol Gui a plate of fresh-cut ox tongues for BBQ. Although robust in taste, I for one will stray away from a second order next time around.
The Korean soup which resembled the ever loved Japanese miso soup was gushed with ease as with the Dolsot Bibimbab a rice dish served with assorted vegetables, beef and an egg yolk broken and tossed inside a sizzling hotpot which made the meal all the more satisfactory.
A drive down to old Dubai is truly worth the visit to experience the Korean cuisine in a lively atmosphere and for hands on Korean BBQ! A meal that’s worth multiple visits until one has conquered the Shogun menu page to page.
